October 18, 2016 Community Meeting Minutes

-Officer Austin from the Baltimore Police Department answered questions about neighborhood safety. The city is looking into ways to deter squeegee activity at intersections across the city. Officer Austin to make contact with restaurant owners aiding squeegee kids.

– Discussion of neighborhood lights. LIPOA is developing a committee to assess current condition and come up with long term maintenance plan.

– $12 membership dues from property owners were collected at the beginning of the meeting.

Madonarri Festival: Cyd Wolfe made a presentation on the Little Italy Madonarri Festival which will take place September 30 – October 2 http://littleitalymadonnari.com/

Street closings from 7am Friday, September 30 to 7am Monday, October 3: S High Street from Pratt to Eastern and Stiles Street from S. High to Exeter.  Trinity will remain open to local traffic only so parking will still be available on both sides of Trinity but the streets will be closed at the S. High intersection.  Exeter will be closed to traffic on Sunday, October 2.

Volunteer opportunities for Little Italy residents as setup crew, greeter, merchandise salesperson, artist assistant, survey taker, transportation/driver, storyteller, children’s events assistant and security. Setup begins 5 AM on Friday the 30th at 5 AM. Neighborhood Cleanup: LIPOA hosted a neighborhood cleanup/dumpster on 9/17. Thanks to Conner from Joe Benny’s Foccaceria for organizing and participating in street sweeping, etc.

– Treasurer’s Report: 8.31/16 Balance of $2,268.12

– Social Report: LIPOA social to be hosted by La Scala on Tuesday 10/11/16 from 5:30-7:30 PM. LIPOA social to be held by Aldo’s onTuesday 11/1/16 from 5:30-7:30 PM.

900 Fleet Street (Harbor East) Presentation given by Cliff Cummins of Monument Realty and Jon Laria of Ballard Spahr. There was a motion “to support the rezoning of 900 Fleet Street from M-2-2 to B-2-4 under current zoning and C5-Downtown Core under the proposed Transform Baltimore Zoning Map. Support shall include a caveat that under no circumstances shall the building height exceed 190 feet.” (Note that tenants will not be eligible for Area 14 parking permits).

There was a second to the motion. The motion was voted on and passed by a majority vote of dues paying members.

1000 Eastern Ave Presentation from Al Barry of AB Associates, Marty Marren (architect), Sean (property owner). There was a motion to “support a maximum of 26 residential units with a maximum building height of 70 feet at 1000 Eastern Avenue.Tenants will not be eligible for Zone 14 parking permits.

There was a second to the motion. The motion was voted on and passed by a majority vote of dues paying members.

Meeting started with Pledge of Allegiance and was followed by introduction of community members.

LIPOA [Acting] Secretary Appointed

  • Perrin Shapiro, Acting Secretary – no one was voted in as secretary at our last meeting so Perrin is stepping in as acting secretary on the board. She is also assisting with social media efforts. She designed the updated our logo that can be found on the Facebook page and the new website.

New Website:

  • Marty McGuire, neighbor, developed LIPOA’s new website, which can be found at https://lipoabaltimore.org/ and set us up with a new newsletter platform (Mail Chimp). It’s easier to sign up and to opt out if you move out of the neighborhood.

    • This will be an every 4th Monday of the month event @ 5:30-7:30 with happy hour specials. Thanks, Joe!
  • July 19th 6-8pm @La Tavola (248 Albemarle St.)
  • Trying to arrange a social for September 13th 6-8pm. Location TBD.

Neighborhood Cleanup Day on Sept 24th

  • Organizing the city to get us a free dumpster! Bring old trash cans to throw out!
  • Sponsored by Promotion Center for Little Italy & Joe Benny’s.

New Trashcans

  • Everyone got their new BPW trash cans – yay! To the extent possible, please put them behind homes/in the alley or inside – spread the word!
  • If your can is too big, and does not fit inside or behind your house, you can call the city at 311 pick up your trash can if you don’t want it and order a new smaller version of the trashcan.

New business:

  • Can we build receptacles into the front of the home? Does it require a permit? LIPOA Board to discuss with Councilman Kraft’s office.
  • October 20th Promotion Center for Little Italy is holding a networking social at Stratford University
  • Promotion Center for Little Italy’s calendar will be shared on LIPOA’s new website.
